Mo Willems, a former Sesame Street writer, and young animator at Curious Pictures in New York, originally designed Sheep as a superhero and Vice President of the United States, before it evolved into a homage to Jay Ward's Rocky and Bullwinkle in the 1960s. According to Willems, Sheep represents the loner, alien, and outcast, which is a common theme in his work.[1]
