Adult Swim is an American adult-oriented television programming block that airs on Cartoon Network, during the evening, prime time, and late-night dayparts. It first launched on September 2, 2001, and features stylistically varied animated and live-action series targeting an adult audience.
The block airs various original programming, ranging from animated sitcoms, adult animation features, parodies, sketch comedies, mockumentaries, and pilots, with many often being aesthetically experimental, transgressive, improvised, and surrealist in nature. Adult Swim also broadcasts Japanese anime and American action programming, and since May 2012 airs this kind of content on its Saturday night Toonami block, which itself is a relaunch of the original block that ran on Cartoon Network from 1997 to 2008.
